Statement
My name is Tyler Smith and the theme for most of my designs is how television affects people and I’m using interruptions and information to overwhelm the audience. The method of my work is to distract the viewer’s eye to grab their attention to where I want it to go. The fonts and typefaces are used to help with the theme of my work, to enhance the experience for the viewer. What people might miss is the background or the way some text is placed and how some element uses the features of television. I want the viewer to look at my designs and animations to see the elements used and the tricks used to control what I want the viewer to see. Usually what people see when they look at it are words moving fast or static in the background.
The way I work is by using brightness or relying on the choice of background so the text can work the way I want it to. Some of my work I would put through Photoshop to get the blurriness effect and Premiere Pro to create a cleaner video. My idea is to play off the environment to enhance the visual feel of the work and the viewer’s experience. I decided to work like this because this way I can distract the viewer’s eye control where they look. Throughout the process I have focused on using medium or big text so the viewer can see where the text starts. I stay away from using bright colors to protect the eyes of the viewer and people with sensitive eyes. The colors I have stuck on were black, white and red because they best represented the text color used on television combined with the theme of work. The techniques I used for my works include fading, blurring, timestamps.
The theme of my works is to communicate the effects of television. When I design something I think about what it is I want the audience to see as opposed to what they are supposed to see. I like doing things in my own way and a little different. My own experience would be that I know how distracting a person gets because people tell me that I need to look up once and awhile. I am not the most sociable person and I missed out on a lot but I am working on that and I hope that eventually I can communicate with others through my work.
